Why International Emmy Award news was the biggest news for India?

History of Emmy Awards:

Emmy Awards is one of the prestigious international awards for marvelous performances in television and web-series. Emmy’s names originated from Immy, which depicts a nickname for camera tube which is used in television (image orthicon).

National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences presented the first Emmy Awards in 1949, where only 6 categories were introduced in the 5 different award ceremonies. Thus, these were named as News and Documentaries in 1973; Daytime programming in 1974; Prime-time programming in 1977; and sports in 1979. Although, new categories have extended to no-end. Therefore Emmy awards open the entries for comedy series, drama, music, documentary, Kids category, digital category and keep adding more.

Emmy Awards holds similar popularity as Oscar Awards for the film industry; therefore, for drama series, Emmys have competed against them. For Emmy Awards, only internal members of the academy can vote for the awards according to the discipline. For instance, this academy’s actors votes for actors, director for directors, and writers for writers.

India with Emmy Awards

Recently, Indian based web-series named ‘Delhi Crimes’ has won the Emmy Awards under the category of Best Drama, where two years ago popular Netflix series called ‘Money Heist’ won the Emmys in 2018. It is the first time India won such a prestigious award and made its position on Emmy Awards. However, this category was first intricate in 2002 by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

In 2011, Subhash Chandra, a chairperson of ZeeTV, has first won the Emmys under the category of Directorate Award, where this category was first introduced in 1973. The award is not related to TV and web series direction, writer or actors.

Therefore, winning the Delhi Crime Emmy award became the important and biggest news for India.

Reasons why Delhi Crime is the deserving award:

Firstly, Delhi Crime is based on the Delhi gangrape cased of 2012, popularly known as the ‘Nirbhaya case.’ Besides, India is one of the countries where rape cases rise every year. Therefore, according to the Times of India (October 7, 2020), 2019 has 4 lakh rape cases as compared to 3.78 lakh in 2018.

By looking at the reports of every distinct of India will give you shocking goosebumps. Thus, media is popularly known as ‘mirror of the society,’ and presenting the vulnerability of women in India on the screen opens the gates of communication with policymakers.

Secondly, India is still a developing country and yet to achieve the 17 Sustainable Development Goals launched by United Nations and 8 Millennium Development Goals by WHO, UN, and World Bank. Indian government stated these goals:

  • Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger.
  • Achieve universal primary education.
  • Promote gender equality and empower women.
  • Reduce child mortality.
  • Improve maternal health.
  • Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases.
  • Ensure environmental sustainability.

Despite being a developing country, India has proved to achieve a position among well-developed countries in Media.

Lastly, Media is the key to development where social sensitivity, vulnerability, availability, affordability, adaptability, policy formation, and other aspects of resources are accountable through Media. And here, Richie Mehta, a director of ‘Delhi Crimes’ Netflix’s original series, beautifully articulated and blended all the aspects around the rape case in Delhi to give a strong message to society.
